The most famous DIY bride has got to be The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Would I have done my own make-up for my Royal Wedding, which was going to be watched by 2billion people across the world? Hell. No. Kate is one, brave, BRAVE lady.
So the question is– Would you do your own make-up on your wedding day?
There are definitely pro’s and con’s for doing your own make-up VS getting a professional make-up artist. The biggest pro is that you will save money, but of all the ways to cut costs on your wedding day, do you really want your make-up to be one of them? After all, once your day is over, and memories start to fade, the photos are you most important keepsake – so you want to look good. In my opinion it completely depends on how confident you are with doing your own make-up, and whether you have the right products to create long lasting beautiful make-up.
Kate Middleton reportedly took make-up lessons from make-up artist, Arabella Preston. Make-up lessons are a great option if you would like to do your own make-up, but need a little confidence by gaining some professional tips and tricks.
If you are thinking about being a DIY bride, and doing your make-up yourself these are my top tips!
CREATE THE LOOK! Start looking at magazines (they don’t have to be bridal) and selecting make-up looks you like. Tear out A LOT of images until you get a coherent idea of how you want to look. Even if you are getting a make-up artist to do your make-up, this is still very useful for you both!
LOOK LIKE YOURSELF! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, now isn’t the time for experimenting. You want to look like the best possible version of yourself.
THINK COLORINGS! When you’re going through those magazines selecting make-up looks you like, remember to choose images of celebs or models with similar colourings to yourself. There is no point selecting an image of Eva Longoria if you are very pale with blonde hair. Whilst those colours and make-up might look good on her, it will look completely different on someone with different colourings. Always choose someone with similar colourings to yourself!
THINK TIME AND LOCATION! The time of your wedding, and the location of your wedding should all be considered when you’re selecting your make-up look. Your make-up should compliment the setting and time. If you’re getting married in the morning you may want to have a fresh faced look, and then apply more make-up for the party later on. This is a big one for ladies having a destination wedding. Will it be hot? What will the lighting be like? Will your skin be tanned?
GET ADVICE! Once you’ve selected your make-up go to a make-up boutique or department store and ask them to select products that would compliment you, and be similar to your selected image. Even if you are a make-up junkie, it’s always interesting to see what products others would pick out for you. Ask friends and family, and read beauty blogs!
PRACTICE AND TAKE PICTURES! Practising your make-up look will give you the confidence you need on the day, and help calm those nerves. You need to know what products you’re using and where. Lastly take photos of your finished look. How is it? Do you need more product or less? Make-up will often look very different in photos, and it takes a lot more make-up than most people think to create a natural look.
GET ORGANIZED! Once you’ve bought all your makeup keep it organized, in a transparent bag. Select all the brushes you are using, and make sure you have cotton wool, and any other tools you need. In the run up to the big day, I would avoid using any of your bridal make-up, so that it stays organized, and you don’t mislay anything. On the day itself lay out everything you need in a neat and tidy way. Create a little ‘touch up’ bag, and give it to your chief bridesmaid or mum to be in charge of.
Phew. That was a lot of advice! Last little bit I promise; take your time!
Make sure you give yourself enough time to complete your look, and lastly enjoy. Create a playlist of music, have fun, and think about Kate Middleton. If she can do it so can you! 2 BILLION PEOPLE WATCHING HER! Crazy.
