The official Lille website announced the signing of a contract with the Portuguese specialist. The contract is valid for two years. His coaching staff also included:

- Thiago Lil
- Jorge Maciel
- Antonio Ferreira
- Paul Morano
We will mention that in the 2020/2021 season, Lille became the champion of France, but lost to coach Christophe Galtier, who left for Nice. The Danes named the great Jocelyn Jorvinek, under whom they fell to 10th place, despite reaching the Champions League playoffs.
Fonseca is best known for his work in Porto, Braga, Shakhtar and Rome. With the Donetsk team, Paulo won the most titles – three championships, three cups and the Ukrainian Super Cup.

But his recent experience with Roma was not successful. In two seasons, the Portuguese did not lead the team to the Champions League (5th and 7th places in the Italian Serie A). At the same time, the team never reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup, but ended up in the semi-finals of the European League.
